Prabhakar Ramachandra Gupta (born May 25, 1947) is a noted academician and a consultant with various firms. He is currently the secretary of Coimbatore Institute of Technology, Coimbatore. Dr. R. Prabhakar is known for his excellent skills as and administrator and a professor and he is currently the member of several Commissions of AICTE,Director of Technical Education, Tamil Nadu, Bharathiar University and Madras University in Computer Science and in Mechanical Engineering. He has over 30yrs of teaching experience. His areas of interests scale across a variety of subjects like CNC, Compilers, Data Structures, Control Systems etc.

Personal life and background

Prabhakar Ramachandra Gupta was born into one of the most educated families in Tamil Nadu. He was born in Coimbatore as the son of Late. Sri G. Ramachandra gupta and S. Saraswathi Bai. He has two brothers and three sisters all of whom have made a significant mark in their fields of expertise. Dr. Prabhakar married Leelavathi, Proprietor, Balasastha Chemicals & Sasta Scientific company. He has two sons, Abhiram and Shivram. Abhiram Prabhakar is currently working with Link-A-Media, as a Design Engineer and Shivaram Prabhakar is currently with Microsoft Corporation, Redmond.

Education

Dr. R. Prabhakar did his schooling from his home town Coimbatore. He studied in the Municipal Boys High School Coimbatore. He passed out on school in May 1962 and joined his pre university at Government Arts College, Coimbatore.

Engineering at IIT Madras

Dr. R. Prabhakar initially got admitted in Coimbatore Institute of Technology in which he currently is the Principal of, but his admission was rejected due to then government policies that stipulated a minimum weight of 90 lbs for students. Fortunately for him, he was offered a seat Mechanical Engineering seat at the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology Madras.

Higher Studies in the US

Dr. Prabhakar went on to pursue his masters in Mechanical Engineering at the Oklakhama State University. He went on the complete his Ph. D in Purdue University in Mechanical Engineering. During his days at the United States, he was actively involved in research and has published several papers notably in the field of engine efficiency and emissions.

Career

Dr. R. Prabhakar has been actively involved in the field of teaching upon his return from America. He has guided several research scholars. Along with his wife, Prabhakar runs the Balasastha Chemicals & Sastha Scientific company.

Coimbatore Institute of Technology

Upon his return from the US, Prabhakar was received with a multitude of offers from institutions like IIT Kanpur, IIT Bombay, GCT and CIT. Taking the advice of his friend Mr. J Srinivasan who is currently the Director of Atmospheric Science at IISc Bangalore, Dr. Prabhakar took the offer from Coimbatore Institute of Technology (CIT). His decision then was backed by the belief that he could contribute effectively to society by working at CIT. Dr. Prabhakar went on to become the Principal of the institution in June 1996. He brought into CIT, its first computer Data General Eclipse S130 in 1981.He was instrumental in the growth of the institution. CIT was ranked 25th amongst the Government and Government-Aided Engineering Colleges in India according to a recent survey by the Outlook magazine.[1]

Associations

Dr. Prabhakar is actively involved in various associations like FIE,ΦΚΦ ,CSI, MORSI, IWS, MISTE etc. He was a consultant for the US Olympic Rowing Team (1974) to design a minimum drag rowing boat. He is currently the consultant for Kasbah Systems Software.

Dr. Prabhakar has actively involved himself in different streams of engineering like, mechanical engineering, operations and computer science and has published several papers.

Dr. R Prabakar is an avid Contract Bridge enthusiast. During his days at IIT Madras he was a very active Bridge player. He actively follows Indian Politics.
